When Bec and Jared Wiseman decided to purchase an investment property in the Gold Coast suburb of Mermaid Waters, they had absolutely no idea things wouldn’t go to plan. However, shortly after the purchase their builder quit, Bec lost her job and interest rates soared – putting the couple under considerable and unexpected financial strain.
Unfortunately, Bec and Jared couldn’t even recoup the money they spent on the home – with attempts at a sale coming in around $300,000 less than they had originally invested. While the home was in a great location and on a good-sized block, it had a strange layout and an 80s aesthetic that was very much in need of an update.
Facing a grim financial situation, the couple turned to the Selling Houses Australia team for help.
The main problem with this house was its layout. Even though it had four bedrooms, three of them were located at the rear of the home – blocking the flow to the outside entertaining space.
The kitchen and dining area was located at the front of the home, and the kitchen was considerably under-size for the scale of the property.
A major priority for the Selling Houses team was therefore to address this layout. They knocked out several walls, and moved two of the bedrooms to the front of the home, creating a generous open-plan living, kitchen and dining area that flowed seamlessly to the outdoors.
For a Gold Coast home, a large entertaining area is a key priority. This home already had a decent-sized garden and pool – yet the flow of the house, and the state of the outdoor space, meant it wasn’t fully utilised.
The previous outdoor area was also heavy on the concrete. Dennis and team focused on pulling this up and laying turf, as well as a timber-stone paved area with seating and a BBQ.

Here on the Gold Coast, it’s never long before the sun comes back out, so this awning is perfect for keeping things cool and adding a touch of Mediterranean flair.

The orientation of this home was, previously, somewhat skewed, and the natural flow of light was obscured. Wendy and the team were careful to position the new windows to ensure the interiors were bright and light-filled.
