Enhancing Light and Comfort with Luxaflex Window Coverings

INSPIRATION

A creative couple reinterpret mid-century style in rural Victoria

For musicians and creatives Renee Cassar and Toby Barlow, best known as the duo behind Tobi Tobi, inspiration often comes from their surroundings. So when they discovered a breathtaking hillside site in central Victoria, framed by rugged bushland and sweeping country views, they knew instantly it was the place to build their forever home.

The couple envisioned a sanctuary that felt deeply connected to nature. With the help of SOS Architects and Studio Tom, they brought that vision to life. The home features three bedrooms, a music studio, two bathrooms, a guest toilet, and a cosy study nook that supports Renee’s everyday creative rhythm. Throughout the interiors, natural materials and soft detailing echo the landscape that first drew them in.

Large floor to ceiling windows play a starring role, capturing the panoramic views that shift in colour and character throughout the day. The result is a living experience that feels immersive, calming and wonderfully attuned to the changing seasons.

House Tour

Crafting a home inspired by modernism and creativity

Working within budget constraints, the couple focused on elements that meant the most to them openness, texture and authenticity. The home channels modernist sensibilities through clean lines and simple framing, while layered influences give it a playful, artistic identity. A sunken lounge finished in earthy tiles brings a Tuscan mood, while the kitchen’s pink peach tiles offer a subtle nod to Japanese craft.

Renee sums it up perfectly: “Let’s call it mid century modern with a sprinkle of Tuscany and a dash of Japan. It might sound unusual but it works.”

Elevating the heart of the home with Luxaflex window coverings

With the expanses of glass acting as hero features, selecting the right window coverings was essential. Renee and Tobi wanted options that would frame the view, support the home’s energy performance and blend seamlessly with the overall design.

“The views are the crown jewel of our property. We chose Luxaflex window furnishings because they enhance everything we love about the home. They look beautiful and help us control light without losing the connection to outdoors,” Renee says.

In the open plan living area, Luxaflex Duette Shades with PowerView Automation give the couple effortless control over temperature and sunlight. Positioned to capture the winter sun, the home naturally warms through the day. The Duette Shades help retain that warmth in winter and soften the harsh afternoon light in summer, creating a comfortable environment all year round.

In the bedrooms, the black window surrounds act like picture frames highlighting ever changing scenes. Duette Shades in Black Onyx complement the frames so they visually disappear when closed. “What impressed us most is how seamlessly the shades work with the way the home functions,” says Renee. “They help us stay connected to the landscape while still feeling protected and comfortable.”

Outdoor living made effortless

The home’s exterior embraces its natural setting through a mix of plaster, lime render, tiles and American oak. During the warmer months, outdoor comfort was a must for the family. A Luxaflex Evo MagnaTrack electric outdoor blind provides welcome relief from the sun while retaining a sense of openness.

“Closing the blind during breakfast instantly makes the space more comfortable. We still feel connected to the outdoors but with just the right amount of protection,” says Renee.

Another favourite feature is the enclosed internal courtyard, a peaceful space filled with soft light and complete privacy. To shield the breeze block wall from intense sun, the couple selected the Luxaflex Nordic Arafura Motorised Folding Arm Awning. “This has been a lifesaver in the courtyard. It means I can sit and enjoy the tranquility at any time of day,” Renee says.

A home filled with music, creativity and meaningful design

Inside, the palette remains soft and uplifting, with off whites, gentle greys, muted blues, peachy pinks and warm creams. To balance the calm base, the couple have layered in moody artwork and bolder pieces that reflect their artistic personalities.

The home is a testament to thoughtful design and the power of embracing nature. For Renee and Tobi, it is a place where music, family life and creativity flow effortlessly and Luxaflex products play an important role in shaping that experience.
