Kelly Anderson’s 4-bedroom, 5-acre property has gone to the dogs – literally and figuratively. Located in North Maclean, about 40 minutes south of the Brisbane’s CBD, the house is where Kelly raised her three grown children and continues to raise her menagerie of dogs, cats and chickens.

Since her daughters have moved away, Kelly has struggled to maintain the property by herself, so the house has been on and off the market for the last 6 years. Kelly has had to fight hard to keep the property from being foreclosed by the bank. At one stage, she had to sell the house to a friend to protect it, before buying it back in 2016.

Working shift work on the trains also makes it hard for Kelly to find the time for household chores… or for renovating the house or even replacing the dog-chewed curtains. She hopes to sell the house so she can move to Bribie Island and enjoy her past times of boating, fishing, walking her dogs, and working on her muscle cars.

Interior

There were a lot of cosmetic changes needed due to the doggie damage, starting with the ragged curtains. Even the simple, clean lines of roller blinds made a huge improvement. The torn fabric curtains were removed and replaced with sleek new Luxaflex Roller Blinds, tidying up and decluttering the space. New carpet in the bedrooms and vinyl flooring throughout the rest of the house eradicated the animal stains and smells.

A bit of country charm came from new timber kitchen benches and rustic light fixtures. New furniture and styling also completed the country feel. The wall paint and window covering colours were also selected to complement and match with the feel of the house, following on in neutral muted tones. The textured surface of the Portobello fabric range Roller Blinds provided an ambiance reminiscent of nature, with the slight sheen of the patterned threads adding a level of depth and sophistication. The colour and texture of the roller blinds contrasted against, yet worked in tandem with the metallic bronze window and door frames, and the smooth and pale green-grey of the walls. The renovated rooms now gave off a calm and inviting atmosphere with the softer materials and colours, with all the aspects working cohesively.

Relatively inexpensive changes to the bathroom – like reglazing the wall tiles, bathtub and vanity, as well as a new shower screen, taps and accessories – made it feel new again.

A slight tweak to the floorplan – removing the wall between the living room and 4th bedroom – opened up the living space and added so much extra light and better access to the back garden. The translucent opacity of the Roller Blinds also helped to brighten up the rooms, blocking out glare and providing a cleaner aesthetic than the existing ragged curtains. Simple, practical and with a fixed chain operation, this was a much better pet-safe solution.

Exterior

There was no obvious front entrance to the house, so new planting and tiling the front patio directed guests to the front door. Widening the driveway, painting the fence and garage doors, and a general tidy up of the property added more street appeal to help lure buyers into the house.

The old crumbling brick BBQ area was turned into a fire pit with bench seating to enjoy the semi-rural surroundings.

In the back patio, the spa was relocated and a new deck was constructed out of composite decking material (recycled timber and plastic) to hide the septic tank. New tiles, planting, screening, and furniture created a pleasant entertaining area near the new BBQ.
