Ian and Ann Vevers are English expats who live in a 5-bedroom, 2-bathroom home in Penrith. They’ve loved their house because it’s deceptively large and full of character.  But their pride and joy has been the garage they converted into a mini English pub.

But now they’re ready to downsize, so after putting the house on the market, they received two offers, however both fell through. Then after changing agents, they received another offer that was more than $100,000 less than the previous offers.

The house has a lot going for it, but it needs serious help getting rid of Anne’s “olde worlde” decor, and getting the garden and pool to sparkle once again.

Interior

With different paint colours and wallpaper patterns in each room of the house, Shaynna needed to restore as sense of order and calm. She did that by using consistent paint colours on the walls and trims, and modernising the overall look with updated furniture and styling.

Replacing the old-fashioned lacy curtains with soft shades also made a big difference to the interiors. They still worked with the character of the house, but added a soft yet contemporary feel. Luxaflex Pirouette® Shadings were installed in the dining and lounge area and 4 of the 5 bedrooms. Shaynna picked out clean white tones in the Pirouette Shadings Linen fabric range, and matched the kitchen and 5th bedroom with single and dual Roller Blinds in similar soft grey and white tones, creating a cohesive aesthetic throughout the house.

The biggest transformation was evidently the lounge, with the excessively frilled curtains removed and replaced with sleek Pirouette Shadings and the walls freshened up with a coat of Taubmans Grey Gamut. The decorative wallpaper above the wall trimmings had to go, immediately decluttering the room and giving the impression of a much more extended space. The highlight of the lounge room, was the addition of PowerView Motorisation to the blinds. WIth a simple click of a button, the Pirouette Shadings can be set to any position desired, moving as individual blinds or in tandem as a group. This provided the ultimate in convenience and light control, and the perfect child and pet-safe solution with no chains or cords attached to the blinds.

The Pirouette Shadings in a Room Darkening opacity were greatly versatile in all rooms and applications, able to be raised out of sight into the headbox, lowered and closed completely to shield away incoming sunlight, or left with the curved vanes open. The soft arcs of the open vanes gave the rooms an elegant and delicate finish, whilst the sheer backing of the vanes helped to block out any harsh glare and provide soft, mellow lighting.

The Dual Roller Blinds in the kid’s bedroom were chosen with an Aria range blockout fabric on the front-facing side, in colour Concrete, coupled with a sheer Tempus fabric in Frost. The dual opacities added a level of practicality, with much greater light and glare control compared to a single roller or simple curtains. Simple to use for children and adults alike in LiteRise operation, the blinds can be easily raised and lowered by hand with a gentle lift or a pull.

Exterior

Charlie was away for this makeover, so Andrew stepped in to offer – ahem – assistance. He helped implement Charlie’s vision of installing a new pool deck, and got professional help cleaning the algae-infested pool. After only a few treatments, it glistened once again, and the new composite decking created a resort-style plunge-pool feel.

The patio area off the converted garage became more of an outdoor room by installing a straight drop awning for protection from the elements, adding a new outdoor setting, and creating better access into the “pub” with new French doors. The Luxaflex Evo Cable Awnings acted as a retractable façade and helped to complete the sheltered space. Easily raised and lowered to any point with the use of a remote control, and driven by the solar-powered Photon One motor, this was a low maintenance yet highly practical and energy efficient addition to the outdoor entertaining area.

Luxaflex - Blog - Selling Houses Australia - S11 EP3 - Awning After

Want the look? Follow Shaynna in the video below as she talks through how to set up your outdoor entertaining area with an awning, so that the space can be used all year round. With a great range of colours, matching headbox and bottom bar, durable fabrics, cable guides for stability, and options for motorisation, the Luxaflex Evo Awning is the perfect choice for an outdoor area which requires protection and privacy.

The house frontage was improved by reducing the height of the shrubs, replanting the front garden beds, laying new turf, and installing new sandstone steppers that tied in much better with the façade paint colours.
